President Trump has promoted tariffs as a way to revive U.S. manufacturing and bring jobs back to regions like the Midwest, though experts note challenges such as a growing need for digital skills, an aging workforce and declining interest in manufacturing careers.

“This view leads people to think that trade is unfair to domestic producers and workers and to see tariffs are justified,” she says.
